Tottenham Hotspur are edging closer to securing the services of midfielder Archie Gray from Leeds United in a cash-plus-player deal, sources have revealed to ESPN. The North London club is prepared to shell out a sum ranging between £25 million and £30 million for the 18-year-old, while also including defender Joe Rodon in the transfer to Elland Road.
The move for Gray comes shortly after a potential transfer to Brentford fell through due to a breakdown in fee payment negotiations. The young midfielder was on the verge of a medical with Brentford before the deal collapsed, leading Tottenham to act swiftly and step in to secure his signature. The pressure is on Leeds to sell players to adhere to financial fair play rules, making this deal all the more crucial for both clubs.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has reportedly set his sights on at least three new signings this summer to bolster the squad. Gray, who can operate in central midfield as well as right-back, fits the bill for one of the required positions. Additionally, the club is also in the market for a striker to provide competition for Son Heung-Min and potentially replace Richarlison, who has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League.
Archie Gray had an impressive campaign last season, featuring in 52 matches across various competitions for Leeds United. Despite his efforts, the Yorkshire club fell short of promotion from the Championship, losing in the playoff final to Southampton. On the other hand, Joe Rodon’s spell at Tottenham since joining from Swansea in 2020 has been underwhelming, with the Welsh defender struggling to establish himself in the first team, starting only eight Premier League games. He was loaned out to Leeds last season, where he managed to make 50 appearances.
