At just 31 years old, Fabian Hürzeler has made history by becoming the youngest permanent head coach in the Premier League with his recent appointment at Brighton. Coming from St. Pauli in Germany, where he led the team back to the Bundesliga after a 13-year absence, Hürzeler has signed a three-year contract with Brighton and is set to start once his work permit is approved.
Brighton chairman Tony Bloom expressed his excitement for the future with Hürzeler at the helm. He praised Hürzeler’s exceptional work at St. Pauli over the past 18 months and highlighted his coaching style that aligns perfectly with Brighton’s vision for the team. Bloom also mentioned Hürzeler’s coaching pedigree, having worked with the German federation at various age group levels, as a valuable asset for the club.
According to Brighton’s official statement, Hürzeler will be officially unveiled at a news conference on July 2nd. Despite his young age, Hürzeler will bring a fresh perspective to the team, who will now have a head coach younger than some of the players on the squad including James Milner, Danny Welbeck, Pascal Gross, and Lewis Dunk.
Hürzeler’s path to becoming a head coach in the Premier League has been nothing short of extraordinary. Born in Houston to a Swiss father and German mother, he started as an assistant coach for the Germany under-18 and under-20 sides before taking over St. Pauli midway through the 2022-23 season. Despite initial challenges, Hürzeler managed to lead the team to a fifth-place finish and a title in the 2.Bundesliga in his first full season.
Replacing Roberto De Zerbi, Hürzeler is ready to take on the challenge of guiding Brighton to success in the upcoming season. With his innovative coaching style, strong leadership skills, and proven track record of success, there is no doubt that Hürzeler’s appointment marks the beginning of a new era for Brighton & Hove Albion. The Premier League will be watching closely as this young coach makes his mark on the world’s most-watched football league.
