The Premier League’s Independent Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel was established with the aim of providing an unbiased assessment of crucial decisions made by referees in matches. Assessment of Will Hughes’ Play

Referee Jarred Gillett’s decision not to show Crystal Palace midfielder Will Hughes a second yellow card in a match against Chelsea was also under scrutiny by the KMI panel. While Hughes had committed a holding offence against Cole Palmer, the panel was divided on whether it impeded a promising attack. Ultimately, the decision not to penalize Hughes was upheld.

Throughout the season, the Premier League has seen minimal controversy surrounding VAR decisions. The only instance of a VAR error thus far occurred when Tim Robinson disallowed Dango Ouattara’s goal for AFC Bournemouth due to handball. Additionally, there were two penalty situations where the on-field decisions were deemed incorrect by the KMI panel, but did not meet the threshold for intervention.

Out of 84 key match incidents reviewed by VAR across the first three matchdays, the panel identified only a handful of errors. The overwhelming majority of decisions were deemed accurate, underscoring the effectiveness of VAR in minimizing referee mistakes. This level of consensus highlights the thoroughness and precision of the KMI panel’s assessments.
