Rehabilitated Sandro Tonali Set to Return to Newcastle United Lineup

After serving a 10-month ban for breaching gambling rules in Italy, Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is poised to make his return to competitive football. The 24-year-old is set to be available for selection for Newcastle’s upcoming game against Tottenham on Sept. 1. The ban was initially imposed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in October 2023 and was followed by a two-month suspended ban by the English Football Association (FA) after his transfer to the Premier League.

In a bid to reduce the severity of his punishment, Tonali engaged in treatment sessions for problem gamblers and committed to delivering talks about his experience over an additional eight-month period as part of a plea-bargain deal with the FIGC. Despite the potential for a three-year suspension under FIFA and FIGC regulations, Tonali’s cooperation with the investigating authorities resulted in a reduction of his ban duration.

The Italy international’s ban in England was also tempered due to his cooperation and self-referral, as outlined in the findings of an independent regulatory commission appointed by the FA. This leniency allowed Tonali to be eligible for selection once again and resume his footballing career with Newcastle United.

Newcastle acquired Tonali from AC Milan in July 2023 in a blockbuster deal valued at around €70 million ($74.7m) with potential add-ons. Despite showing promise in his early appearances for the team, he was sidelined prior to the ban coming into effect after featuring in 11 matches and finding the back of the net once.

Sandro Tonali’s imminent return to action marks a significant development for Newcastle United, as they look to benefit from the talents of the rehabilitated midfielder. With his ban behind him and a desire to make amends for past transgressions, Tonali has the opportunity to make a positive impact on the pitch and contribute to the team’s success moving forward.
