Manchester United’s interest in Matthijs de Ligt has intensified, with sources informing ESPN about the club’s upcoming official approach to Bayern Munich. The move comes after negotiations with Everton for Jarrad Branthwaite hit a standstill. The Red Devils have already had a bid turned down by Everton and are now turning their attention towards the talented Dutch defender.
Manager Erik ten Hag is eager to bolster his defensive options this summer, especially after the departure of Raphael Varane. In addition to De Ligt, United are also looking at other options such as Leny Yoro from Lille and Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. Real Madrid and Liverpool are also said to be interested in the young defenders.
Manchester United have been tracking De Ligt since his breakthrough at Ajax, even before his move to Juventus in 2019. The defender joined Bayern in 2022 but has found playing time hard to come by. With Bayern eyeing other defensive targets, De Ligt’s future at the Allianz Arena looks uncertain.
United are looking to offload Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire this summer, with Fenerbahce reportedly interested in Lindelof. However, the club is yet to receive a formal offer for the Swedish defender. Talks are ongoing with Jonny Evans regarding a new contract, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding United’s defensive line.
Securing a new centre-back is a top priority for United this summer, along with signing a striker and a central midfielder. If either Lindelof or Maguire depart, the club will push for the acquisition of two defenders. However, financial constraints and the need to strengthen other areas of the squad could complicate United’s transfer plans. The departure of striker Anthony Martial has only added to the urgency of United’s recruitment drive.
