Manchester United in Talks with Erik ten Hag for New Contract

Manchester United is currently in discussions with manager Erik ten Hag regarding a new contract ahead of their upcoming preseason tour of the United States. Sources have revealed to ESPN that negotiations have been ongoing and are described as “complicated,” but have been progressing positively. The club is aiming to finalize the agreement before their preseason tour kicks off with a match against Arsenal in Los Angeles on July 27.

One of the key points of contention in the discussions with Ten Hag involves redefining his responsibilities at Old Trafford. While the Dutchman has been involved in player recruitment since his arrival in 2022, the new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and his INEOS team are pushing for a shift in focus towards coaching and team preparation. This adjustment in Ten Hag’s role is being considered as a crucial part of the contract negotiations.

It has been reported that United’s priority is reaching a new agreement with Ten Hag before considering further additions to the coaching staff. However, former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is being considered for a coaching position within Ten Hag’s team. Van Nistelrooy has previously engaged in talks with Burnley regarding their managerial position after Vincent Kompany’s departure to Bayern Munich. The potential addition of Van Nistelrooy could bring valuable experience and expertise to the coaching staff at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag currently has Steve McClaren and Mitchell van der Gaag on his coaching staff, along with Darren Fletcher, who held the position of technical director before the appointment of Jason Wilcox by Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Benni McCarthy has been serving as a forwards coach since 2022, but his contract is set to expire this summer. The possible restructuring of the coaching staff further highlights the importance of reaching a new contract agreement with Ten Hag as the club prepares for the upcoming season.

Manchester United is actively engaged in negotiations with Erik ten Hag regarding a new contract, with a focus on redefining his role and potential additions to the coaching staff. The outcome of these discussions will have a significant impact on the direction of the club as they gear up for the new season.
