In a groundbreaking move for gender equality in football, Denmark’s players union Spillerforeningen has successfully negotiated a new agreement with the Danish Football Association (DBU). This agreement will ensure that both the men’s and women’s national teams receive equal pay and conditions at tournaments. The initiative came after the men’s team declined a pay raise, prompting the union to take action to level the playing field.
Spillerforeningen Director Michael Sahl Hansen explained that the proposal was well-received by the football association, leading to smooth and efficient negotiations. The goal was to finalize the agreement before the beginning of Euro 2024, demonstrating a commitment to timely progress in achieving gender equality in the sport. Both the men’s and women’s teams expressed satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting the importance of working together towards a fair and inclusive system.
Under the new agreement, both sets of national team players will receive the same basic remuneration for their appearances. Additionally, a joint base will be established for the shared use of the men’s, women’s, and youth teams, fostering a sense of unity and collaboration within Danish football. Notably, the women’s team will see a 50% increase in insurance coverage, while the men’s under-21 team will receive a 40% boost, with the costs offset by a 15% reduction in the men’s team insurance coverage.
