Gerardo “Tata” Martino, head coach of Inter Miami, has confirmed that Lionel Messi will not be playing in the team’s upcoming Leagues Cup round-of-32 match against Toronto FC. This decision comes as Messi has not been able to train with the team since his return from Copa América due to an ankle injury. Despite making progress in his recovery, Messi is still limited to training in the gym rather than on the field.
On the other hand, Luis Suárez will be available for the clash against Toronto as he makes his comeback from a recurrent knee injury. The striker had to miss out on the 2024 MLS All Star match in Columbus, Ohio, as well as Inter Miami’s final group stage game against Tigres on Aug. 3. However, Martino has confirmed that Suárez has been training well and will be ready for the upcoming match.
Additionally, Benjamin Cremaschi and Diego Gómez are set to rejoin the team after their international duties. Cremaschi, who played for the U.S. in the Paris Olympics, reached the quarterfinals before losing to Morocco. Meanwhile, Gómez represented Paraguay up to the quarterfinals. Martino mentioned that both players are in good condition and ready to contribute to the team.
With most of the squad available for selection, Miami will be looking to secure a victory against Toronto in order to progress to the next round of the tournament. Martino emphasized the importance of playing with intensity and facing a tough Toronto side that has been performing well in recent matches. He acknowledged the challenge ahead but expressed confidence in his team’s ability to compete at a high level.
