Spain’s Administrative Sports Court (TAD) has initiated proceedings against LaLiga president Javier Tebas. This action comes after a complaint was lodged by Real Madrid regarding the CVC Capital Partners deal signed by the league. The deal, amounting to a substantial €2 billion investment, was approved by LaLiga clubs in December 2021, despite resistance from Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Athletic Club.
Real Madrid’s complaint to TAD alleges that Javier Tebas abused his powers during the negotiations with CVC over TV rights. The club claims to have been discriminated against by LaLiga and accuses Tebas of lack of transparency in his handling of the assembly where the agreement with CVC was discussed. Madrid specifically pointed out that Tebas did not provide the mandatory 10 days’ notice before the meeting. Instead, he only gave eight days’ notice, which, according to the complaint, goes against the protocols set by TAD.
Real Madrid, along with Barcelona and Athletic Club, took legal action against LaLiga, arguing that the agreement with CVC was invalid. They labeled the deal as “illegal,” while LaLiga defended it, stating that the investment would benefit and strengthen its clubs. A previous court ruling in February dismissed the lawsuit brought by the three clubs against the league.
In a related development, the TAD recently suspended Pedro Rocha, the president of the Spanish football federation (RFEF), for a period of two years. The suspension was imposed due to a serious infraction related to abuse of power by Rocha during his tenure as the interim president of RFEF. This incident underscores the heightened scrutiny and accountability facing sports administrators in Spain.
