Bayern Munich has reached an agreement in principle to sign midfielder João Palhinha from Fulham in a deal worth up to €56 million ($60.4m). This transfer represents a club-record sale for Fulham, with €51m paid up front and an additional €5m in add-ons. The 28-year-old Palhinha is expected to sign a four-year deal with the German club.
This move ends Bayern’s year-long pursuit of Palhinha, which initially saw a deal collapse between the two clubs last summer. Fulham struggled to find a replacement for the midfielder at that time, leading to the breakdown of the transfer. Palhinha had even traveled to Germany for a medical examination before the deal was called off. However, it seems that the Portuguese international will finally get the move he desires once his involvement in the Euro 2024 tournament is over.
In a recent statement, Palhinha expressed his focus on the current Euro 2024 quarterfinals with the Portugal national team, where they are set to face France. He also hinted at his desire for a move, stating, “Both clubs know where I want to be in a month.” The midfielder joined Fulham from Sporting CP in 2022 and has since made 79 appearances for the club, even winning the Player of the Year award in his debut season.
The transfer of João Palhinha from Fulham to Bayern Munich marks a significant move for both clubs. While Fulham secures a record sale, Bayern adds a talented midfielder to their squad. Palhinha’s journey from Portugal to England and now to Germany showcases his ability and determination to succeed at the highest levels of football. As the deal is expected to be finalized after the Euro 2024 tournament, fans can look forward to seeing Palhinha in action for his new club in the upcoming season.
