Croatia Fined for Incidents at Euro 2024 Match

Croatia has been hit with a hefty fine of €105,000 by UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body following the incidents that occurred during the Euro 2024 match against Italy. The Croatian Football Association revealed the news on Friday, stating that the atmosphere surrounding the game in Leipzig was quite different from the previous matches held in the city.

According to the statement released by the football federation, the fine was imposed due to the throwing of objects (45,000 euros), lighting of flares (30,000 euros), and inappropriate behavior (30,000 euros) by some Croatian fans during the Croatia-Italy match. This is not the first time Croatia has faced fines for similar offenses, as they were previously penalized for similar incidents during their game with Albania.

Leipzig police were on high alert before, during, and after the Croatia vs. Italy game, resulting in several arrests and the detention of known troublemakers among the Croatian fans. In fact, eight high-risk fans who had been denied entry to Germany by the Federal Police were reported to be in the area, leading to immediate action by the police.

At the stadium, Croatian fans engaged in the multiple use of pyrotechnic products, forcing the police to intervene. Following the game, approximately 20 Croatian fans reportedly physically attacked Italian supporters, resulting in two individuals requiring hospitalization. As a result, 11 Croatian and Bosnian suspects were taken into custody and are currently under investigation for causing grievous bodily harm.

Despite hosting previous matches without incident, Leipzig experienced a turbulent Euro 2024 game that has left a stain on the competition. The city is gearing up for its final game, hoping that the security measures put in place will prevent any further incidents from occurring. It is crucial for fans to remember that football is a game that should be enjoyed peacefully and without violence, respecting the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship.
