The Rising Attendance Numbers in Major League Soccer

Major League Soccer recently announced that they are on track to achieve record attendance numbers in the 2024 season. The league is currently averaging 23,246 fans per game, which is a 7% increase from the previous year. This steady growth in attendance is a positive sign for the league, as they are well on their way to surpassing the record average attendance of 22,111 fans per game.

One of the key drivers behind the increase in attendance numbers is the presence of global soccer superstar Lionel Messi with Inter Miami CF. Messi’s star power has undoubtedly drawn more fans to the games, leading to a significant boost in attendance. It is evident that star players can have a major impact on fan turnout and interest in the league.

Several teams in Major League Soccer have experienced double-digit increases in average attendance year-over-year. Teams like CF Montréal, the Chicago Fire, the LA Galaxy, the New England Revolution, the New York Red Bulls, Orlando City, Sporting Kansas City, and the Vancouver Whitecaps have all seen significant growth in attendance numbers. Interestingly, six of these teams have hosted Inter Miami matches, further highlighting the positive influence of star players on attendance.

In 2024, 25 out of the league’s 29 teams have seen an increase or remained steady in attendance compared to the previous year. This widespread growth in attendance is a promising sign for Major League Soccer, indicating that interest in the league is continuing to grow. With nearly 6.5 million fans already attending MLS matches this season, the league is well-positioned for continued success in the future.

Throughout the season, fifteen matches have seen attendance numbers surpassing 40,000, marking a new milestone in league history. These record-breaking attendance numbers demonstrate the growing popularity and appeal of Major League Soccer among fans across the country. As the league continues to attract top talent and expand its reach, it is likely that attendance numbers will continue to climb in the coming years.
