Pep Guardiola, the esteemed manager of Manchester City, has firmly stated that a return to Barcelona is not in his future plans. Despite his contract with City set to expire in June 2025, Guardiola hinted earlier in May that the upcoming season could potentially be his last at the Etihad. When recently asked about a potential return to Barcelona, where he accumulated 14 honours during his four-year tenure, Guardiola unequivocally stated, “It’s a door that is closed.”
During a press conference at his annual Legends Trophy golf tournament in Girona, Spain, Guardiola delved into the complexities of managing Barcelona. He emphasized the intricate nature of the Barça bench, attributing these challenges to the need to navigate numerous cases. Drawing a comparison between his current experience at Manchester City and his past at Barcelona, Guardiola highlighted the differences in privacy, noting that at City, operations are kept internal while at Barça, everything is public knowledge.
Following a trophy-less season in 2023-24, Barcelona made the decision to appoint Hansi Flick as Xavi Hernández’s successor. Xavi was relieved from his managerial duties at the end of the season as the club sought a new direction. Guardiola, when questioned about the comparisons between himself and Xavi, expressed that he had been distanced from Barcelona for over a decade and thus was not involved in creating those comparisons. He extended his best wishes to Xavi in pursuing new challenges and commended Barcelona for placing their trust in Flick, considering his past successes at Bayern Munich and with the German national team.
In offering his support for Hansi Flick’s new role at Barcelona, Guardiola highlighted the necessity for patience and internal support when transitioning to a new club. Acknowledging Flick’s achievements at Bayern Munich, including a historic treble win in 2020, Guardiola commended Flick for his ambition and emphasized the importance of allowing time for adjustment and progress. Despite Barcelona’s recent acquisition of Kylian Mbappé, Guardiola maintained that Barcelona remains a formidable opponent with or without the star forward, particularly in the Champions League where they are considered the team to beat.
