Real Madrid captain Nacho Fernández is reportedly in advanced talks to join Saudi Arabia’s Al Ittihad on a free transfer. Sources have revealed that Nacho’s contract with Madrid will expire on June 30, and he is set to leave the club for the first time in his career. It was reported that Nacho had made the decision to leave even before Real Madrid won the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, where he lifted the trophy as captain. Despite doubts about his future in the summer of 2023, Nacho extended his contract for one more season. However, as the season progressed, there were increasing doubts about his future at the club.
Nacho’s form throughout the 2023-24 season has been inconsistent, with 29 appearances in LaLiga. Nevertheless, he finished the season strongly, contributing to Madrid’s run to the Champions League final. While there were suggestions of an exit during the campaign, Nacho asked the club for time to reflect on his situation. Although the defender had been linked with a move to MLS, reports indicate that he is now in talks to join Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia.
Negotiations with Al Ittihad are said to be progressing, and an agreement is expected within the next two weeks. The Saudi club, which finished fifth in the league last season, is looking to make significant changes by signing new players and a new coach. Despite not having officially communicated his decision to Real Madrid, it is assumed that Nacho will be leaving the club. While it is a bittersweet moment for both Nacho and the club, as he will not be ending his career as a “one club man,” he has earned the right to decide his future.
Nacho is among a select group of players at Real Madrid who have achieved great success, including winning six European Cups. Alongside players like Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Dani Carvajal, and Paco Gento, Nacho has won a total of 26 trophies with the club. Having joined Madrid at the age of 11, Nacho made his first-team debut in the 2012-13 season and has been a loyal servant to the club ever since.
Currently on international duty with Spain at Euro 2024, Nacho will be facing Croatia in their opening game on Saturday. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his club future, Nacho remains focused on representing his country at the highest level. His move to Al Ittihad, if finalized, will mark a new chapter in his career as he looks to continue his footballing journey in Saudi Arabia.
